General Information
pixi Mobile has already been successfully tested in the past on many industrial handheld devices with integrated scanners, smartphones, and tablets. Since a large number of devices are no longer available on the market or are no longer distributed directly, we are continuously working on an update of the device overview.
Please note that we cannot give a universally valid recommendation for the devices listed here, as requirements vary greatly depending on industry and budget.
Descartes Systems (Germany) GmbH does not sell or ship any hardware.
Please understand that we unfortunately cannot test all peripheral accessories for every listed model (e.g., pistol grips). Therefore, we cannot provide information on compatibility or incompatibility.
If you encounter device-specific issues, please always contact the manufacturer of your device or your device reseller first.
One of our sales partners in Germany is Identwerk GmbH. They also offer demo devices for loan. If possible, we recommend extensive testing in your own environment before purchasing a new device in order to identify potential challenges prior to acquisition.
Cooperations with hardware manufacturers and sales partners
Descartes cooperates with sales partners for warehouse hardware. In the DACH region, our cooperation partner is Identwerk GmbH. Contact: sales@identwerk.de or +49 7066 911980
The minimum requirements for pixi Mobile that every device must meet are:
Minimum: Android 8 (API 26)*
Recommended: Android 10 or higher
Display resolution: 800 × 480
*Planned future minimum: Android 11. In line with Zebra’s LifeGuard for Android support guidelines, we are planning to make Android 11 the new minimum requirement in the long term. Customers who are still using devices with Android 8 or 9 should plan to replace their devices. We will inform you in good time.
Which factors should influence the choice of handheld device?
With the wide range of manufacturers and device models suitable for pixi Mobile, choosing the right device can be challenging. The following criteria should help with your decision:
Screen size, resolution, brightness, and contrast are key to working efficiently. The more information you can see without scrolling in both dark and bright, well-lit warehouse areas, the more comfortable it is to work.
The IP protection rating and IK rating impact resistance rating provide information about how robust a device is. Depending on the work environment and potentially less careful handling, devices with higher protection and impact resistance ratings are recommended.
Depending on how good (or poor) the Wi-Fi coverage is and whether there are occasional connectivity issues, Wi-Fi-only devices may be sufficient. Alternatively, devices with a SIM card slot can be useful to use mobile data as a fallback in case of disruptions.
Similar to smartphones, you should consider long battery life as well as charging times when the battery is partially or fully depleted. It can be advantageous if the battery is removable: while the device is in use, a second battery can be charged in parallel to enable uninterrupted work.
Depending on your product range/item size and employee preferences, small and handy devices that fit in a pocket may be suitable or larger, typically heavier devices with a pistol grip.
Our customers generally prefer devices with a real, integrated keyboard to avoid delays when a virtual keyboard appears, which can also cover parts of the screen.
So-called long-range scanners include a special laser that can read barcodes from greater distances. These are typically suitable for high-bay warehouse areas where cartons/pallets are scanned from far away. Based on our experience, long-range scanners are less suitable for picking areas.
Since pixi Mobile supports essential logistics processes, we recommend relying only on new, reliable, and well-established devices from well-known manufacturers. In addition, we recommend purchasing devices from established suppliers that also provide support and maintenance (e.g., replacement of built-in batteries or displays, cleaning, etc.) and offer good service as part of warranty and guarantee terms. We therefore advise against purchasing used devices and/or self-importing (e.g., from Asia).
