What's the meaning of "EAN" in regard to pixi barcodes?

EAN stands for European Article Number and it consists of 13 or 8 digits. The EAN is always displayed in form of a barcode.

  • To achieve an efficient work flow using pixi, it is necessary to provide each item with an EAN. The scannable barcode is then automatically generated from the respective EAN.

  • A barcode is always generated from the EAN, so it contains the same information that the EAN has. Thus, the barcode is the graphic representation of the EAN.

  • If the items have a manufacturer EAN, this can also be used in pixi. By scanning or by input, the manufacturer EAN can be assigned to the respective product. For this, the EAN that pixi had created is simply replaced.

  • If your shop system (oxid, xt:Commerce, etc.) provides the maintenance of EANs, then pixi can import them from there.

  • If you do not assign an EAN in the shop, pixi automatically assigns it when the item is first imported. This EAN consists of 13 digits (12 + 1 check digit).

  • The EAN can be printed out at any time via a label printer (e.g., Zebra LP2844).

  • However, an EAN can only be assigned to one item at a time since each item has a unique EAN. The uniqueness refers to the item, not to circumstances in the background (supplier, manufacturer, etc.), since these can change.

  • We recommend you to use the EAN-13 system. For further information, please click here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Article_Number

  • The allocation of a shorter barcode is possible, but this is then automatically filled by pixi back up to 13 digits.

  • As soon as you change the EAN of an item, the old EAN is removed from the system, so all affected items must be provided with the new EAN.

  • If an item is assigned a different barcode than the one on the item, you will receive the error message "Barcode not Found" at Scan-In in the Inventory application. Then you can search the item by name and assign it the new barcode. The EAN is always displayed in the form of a bar code.

Why is the item barcode not printed as depicted in pixi?

If you print an item label from the application pixi Inventory, it may happen that the barcode on the label does not correspond to the barcode as it is displayed in pixi Inventory.

If this is the case, you should check the database setting "Barcode - Type for Labels" (pixi Control Center > Database Settings > Barcodes / EAN Settings). The default value of this setting is "(empty string)". This means that the barcode to be printed is printed in EAN-13 format.

An EAN-13 barcode consists of 13 digits, the last digit being a check digit and calculated from the previous 12 digits. How exactly the check digit calculates, you can read in this Wikipedia article: International_Article_Number.

If, therefore, the barcode of the item isn't printed as displayed in the pixi Inventory interface, the reason for this is that the last digit of the barcode stored in pixi contains an incorrect check digit, since when printing a barcode the last digit of the barcode is ignored and re-calculated.

You now have two options:

  1. Change the barcode or the last digit (check digit) of the barcode to the correct value. The barcode should then be printed correctly.
For example, on this website you can check whether a barcode is valid: EAN-Code-Generator and -Checker.

  2. Change the database setting "Barcode Type for the Item Labels" to "Code128" (without spaces and quotes). In this case, the barcode is printed in the format code 128. A check of the barcode or a calculation of a check digit does not take place here.

Note: Please note that more space is required on the label for printing barcodes in the "Code128" format than in "EAN-13" format. It may be necessary to use larger labels, for example bin labels (3.2 x 5.7 cm) or to adapt the item label. For further information on how to edit the item label, please click here: Configuration of the item label print.

What does the user "pixi script" stand for in the bin history?

When performing a pixi update, different data gets checked and fixed (if needed) to ensure good data quality.

If the bin history shows "pixi script3" in the Updated By column, then it was noticed that entries are missing in the bin history during a pixi update. Considering stock movements and stock of the item, a new entry gets created which rectifies the item's bin history.

Can I use GTIN-14 in pixi?

Yes, you can use GTIN-14 in pixi. To do this, activate Enable GTIN-14 in Control Center. With this setting, the codes are interpreted as follows:

  • OFF (0) (default): The GS1 barcode together with the EAN13 barcode and an additional check digit

    • GS1 example: 02 (GS1 barcode) + EAN13 + 0 + 10 + BN + 15 + BBD

  • ON (1): The GS1 barcode with a leading zero and the EAN13 barcode

    • GS1 example: 02 (GS1 barcode) + 0 + EAN13 + 10 + BN + 15 + BBD
