In this article pixi Administrators can find detailed information about pixi licensing - how it works and how this affects pixi* administrators and pixi* users.
pixi uses the concurrent user license (CUL) approach. Concurrent user licensing means that your company purchased a fixed number of pixi licenses (CULs) that can be shared by anyone who needs to use pixi. Because of this, your company can have more users registered in pixi* than the number of purchased concurrent user licenses. However, the number of currently logged in pixi* users can't exceed the number of concurrent user licenses. For example, a company could have 50 pixi users of which 30 work with pixi* only in the morning and 20 work with pixi* only in the afternoon. In this case, a company would have to purchase 30 CULs.
Concurrent user licensing is different than named user licensing which would require your company to buy a license for each individual user whether they are using pixi or not. If we take the example above, and named user licensing would be used, a company would have to purchase 50 user licenses.
Licensing for all versions up to LOU Update 40 / AVA Official Update 1 (ELI)
One pixi license (CUL) is used: When a user logs in to one or more pixi desktop application with the same pixi user and on the same Windows computer. This enables pixi* users to run multiple pixi* desktop applications on their computer and still use only one pixi* license.
If the number of purchased pixi licenses is exceeded additional users will not be able to log in to pixi applications. You can check when the maximum available number of licenses was reached and which user could not log in anymore in the pixi Control Center > General > Tools.
The license is released immediately after a user closes all pixi desktop applications on a computer.

Licensing for LOU Update 41 / AVA Official Update 2 and higher
From pixi AVA Official - Update 2 pixi licensing is unified for pixi desktop applications and Web pixi. There are some changes regarding how pixi tracks licenses which are important for pixi users and administrators.
One pixi license (CUL) is used:
When a user logs in to one or more pixi desktop applications with the same pixi* user and on the same Windows computer.
When a user connects to a terminal server and logs in to one or more pixi desktop applications with the same pixi user.
When a user logs in to Web pixi with the same pixi user account, on the same computer and with one browser. When a user starts pixi* desktop applications from the widget on the Start page of Web pixi the same pixi license is used.
Several pixi licenses are used:
When several pixi users log in to one or more pixi desktop applications on the same Windows computer.
Users must start pixi desktop applications from the Desktop Applications widget in Web pixi, if they log in to Web pixi and pixi* desktop applications on the same computer. If they start pixi* desktop applications from Windows, and they are already logged in to Web pixi, they will use two pixi* licenses.
If the number of purchased pixi licenses is exceeded additional users will not be able to log in to pixi applications. You can check when the maximum available number of licenses was reached and which user could not log in anymore in the pixi Control Center > General > Tools.
pixi License is released:
If pixi desktop applications are started from Windows: Maximum 15 seconds after a user closes all pixi desktop applications on a computer.
-
Web pixi: When a user logs out from the web application and closes all pixi* desktop applications that were started from Web pixi.
If a user closes the browser or shuts down the computer instead of logging out of the application, his license will be released in 5 minutes. Also if a user clears cookies for pixi, he should log out of the application before that. If a user will do that in the application, he will be using 2 licenses for 5 minutes.
If a user closes all pixi desktop applications that were started from Web pixi but doesn't log out of Web pixi* (e.g. just closes the browser) the license will be released at 4:00 AM.
If a user logs out from the web application but doesn't close all pixi desktop applications that were started from Web pixi the license won't be released. Next time a user logs into Web pixi with the same browser he will again use the same license.
Check used licenses in pixi web application
Users with permission to access pixi Control Center have the option to check all logged in users and also release licenses that are used.
List of currently logged in users is available in the pixi web application Control Center > User Administration.
A list of actively logged in users can be fetched by calling the API call pixiReportActiveLogins. A list view in pixi web is currently unavailable.
